Famous for its fishing, Lottin Point is located 132 kilometers North East of Opotiki, 202 kilometers North of Gisborne and 17 kilometers West of Hicks Bay. World renowned for fishing and diving, there is lots to do here in our remote, tranquil paradise.

Walking

From the motel guests can take a 20 minute scenic walk past the Otanga Station woolshed and downhill to the Pohutukawa fringed bay below. It is a great place in the summer season to swim and cool off.

Land-Based Fishing

Land-based Fishing demands a lot more skills than just fishing. To aid our fishing clientele there is a walkway from the motel for our guests down to the fishing rocks & ledges beneath the motel. We have seen many experienced fishermen return sporting their catches, varieties most caught include, Kingfish, Snapper and Tarakihi. Lottin Point is recognised by many as one of the best places in New Zealand to land big fish.

Deep-Sea Fishing

If you have a large boat, the closest place to launch it will be Waihau Bay. However, smaller boats that can be carried by two people, can be launched from Lottin Point Bay,  a few hundred meters from the motel.

Fishing the Ranfurly Banks is truly a once in a lifetime experience! The Ranfurly Banks is world-renowned as a top fishing mecca destination. For deep-sea fishing day trips to the Ranfurly Banks visit: East Coast Sportfishing Charters. Archie and his team at East Coast Sportfishing Charters will take care of all your fishing needs. Archie is now able to launch his charter boat, Penrod II from the Bay down at Lottin Point, only 2 minutes by car from the motel.

Visit East Cape Lighthouse

The East Cape Lighthouse marks the easternmost point of the North Island of New Zealand. A leisurely 50 minute drive from Lottin Point Motel, the lighthouse is a steep climb up some 800 steps through private land, to stunning views overlooking East Cape. Go with plenty of time, so that there is no rush and you can enjoy the stunning rural surroundings.

At present the lighthouse is undertaking maintenance and is not accessible to the public until further notice.

Visit the Oldest Pohutakawa Tree at Te Araroa

Te Aroroa is a half hour drive from Lottin Point Motel, and here you will find Te Waha-o-Rerekohu. At 600 years old, it is New Zealand’s oldest and largest pohutakawa tree.

Photography

Lottin Point offers some of the most spectacular spots for capturing the beauty of the ocean, the raw land covered in native bush and NZ Manuka. The ever changing ocean and the plentiful fish life make it a perfect site for photography.

Star Gazing

Lottin Point Motel is a perfect place to stargaze from on a calm night due to the remote location.

Diving

The waters beneath Lottin Point area are great for diving, crayfish diving or spearfishing.

Kayaking

Lottin Point is the perfect location for kayaking when the weather conditions are right.

Cycling

Lottin Point Motel is 3.65kms from the main road, and is a perfect base for cyclists of all abilities.

Located towards the end of Lottin Point Road, near Potikirua Foresty, is a perfect cycling trip along a gravel road, with a glorious beach waiting at the end. It’s an ideal ride for beginner cyclists, with a 4km return trip. For the more seasoned rider, a trip from the motel to Cape Runaway is 16kms away (32km return).

Waihau Bay – Boy Film Set

Taika Waititi’s 2010 film ‘Boy’ is a homage to his hometown, Waihau Bay, and many of the sites are exactly as they appear in the film. Check out Boy, Rocky and Chardonnay’s local haunts: buy an ice-block at the General Store or jump off the jetty across the road. A ten minutes drive west along the coast will take you past Raukokore school where Boy shows off his moonwalk and the Raukokore Bridge where Weirdo lives. You’ll also pass Waititi’s marae, Maru o Hinemakaho (Pararaki), where the ‘Boy’ crew was based during filming.

From the motel, you are 30 minutes driving from Waihau Bay.

Mount Hikurangi

Hikurangi Te Toka Tapu, the sacred mountain of Ngati Porou holds a special place for the Maori people. Hikurangi represents “home” for the 70,000 plus Ngati Porou tribal members who live on the East Coast. Standing at 1754 meters, It is the highest non-volcanic mountain in the North Island. It is 130km north of Gisborne and the first point on the New Zealand mainland and the world to greet the morning sun.
