Famous for its fishing, Lottin Point is an unsullied haven located 132 kilometres from Opotiki, 202 kilometres from Gisborne and 17 kilometres from Hicks Bay. A mecca for fishing and diving, there is lots to do here in our remote, tranquil paradise.

Fishing

For decades Lottin Point has been the secret fishing spot to go to, for those in the know. It’s natural coastal rock formations and remote location make it a haven for marine life, and as a result, the fishing is fantastic!

Land-Based Fishing

Land-based Fishing demands a lot more skills than just fishing. To aid our fishing clientele we have built a walkway from the motel for our Patrons down to the fishing rocks & ledges beneath the motel. We have seen many of our Patrons return sporting their catches, varieties most caught include, Kingfish, Snappers, Tarakihi, …  Lottin Point is recognised by many as one of the best places in New Zealand to land big fish.

Being ourselves fishermen, we are going the extra mile to provide our Patrons with the best fishing experience they could get:

  • A huge bait freezer
  • Large accommodation with a fully functional kitchen (oven & cooktop, large fridge-freezer, electric frypan) dedicated to groups of fishermen up to 8 persons

Deep-Sea Fishing

If you have a large boat, the closest place to launch it will be Waihau Bay. However, smaller boats that can be carried by two people, can be launched from Lottin Point Bay,  a few hundred meters from the motel.

Fishing the Ranfurly Banks is truly a once in a lifetime experience! The Ranfurly Banks is world-renowned as a top fishing mecca destination. For deep-sea fishing day trips to the Ranfurly Banks visit: www.coastalfishingcharters.co.nz . The team at Coastal Fishing Charters have won numerous prizes & added to National titles in various major tournaments in the Bay of Plenty. Their boat is the 8.6 meter Senator – Strictly Fishing. They use the latest electronics onboard and the qualified skippers will put your safety first.

Lottin Point Motel is situated 30 minutes from Hicks Bay where the boat is usually launched from.

Cycling

Lottin Point Motel is 3.65kms from the main road, and is perfect base for cyclists of all abilities.

The motel to Poutikirua Beach is a perfect cycling trip along a metal road with a glorious beach at the end of the road. Perfect ride for a beginner cyclist (4kms return trip).

For the more seasoned rider, a trip from the motel to Cape Runaway is 16kms away (32km return). The path is going through private lands, but let us know in advance, and we will be happy to secure the owner’s authorization to go through.

Visit East Cape Light House

The East Cape Light House marks the easternmost point of the North Island of New Zealand. A leisurely 50 minute drive from Lottin Point Motel, the lighthouse is a steep climb up some 800 steps through private land, to stunning views overlooking East Cape. Go with plenty of time, so that there is no rush and you can enjoy the stunning rural surroundings.

Hunting

Tailored especially for our Patrons, we can organize a hunting day you will not forget with https://www.waikura.co.nz/ ! For a day or half a day trip, they will take you through dense New Zealand native bush, set in the midst of some of the most beautiful landscapes rarely seen by many New Zealanders in search of Ferral animals. The selection includes Wild Cattle, Stag, Hinds and Pigs. You will be placed into the hands of a seasoned guide, enjoy the comfort of an experienced four-wheel driver taking you to your hunting grounds. They offer various additional services to make sure you enjoy a day without worries (Field dressing, carcass recovery, skinning, meat service, delivery). The trips are subject to availability, so be sure to make your booking well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Visit the Oldest Pohutakawa Tree at Te Araroa

Te Aroroa is a half hour drive from Lottin Point Motel, and here you will find Te Waha-o-Rerekohu. At 600 years old, it is New Zealand’s oldest and largest pohutakawa tree.

Lottin Point offers some of the most spectacular spots for capturing the beauty of the ocean, the raw land covered in native bush and NZ Manuka. The ever changing ocean and the plentiful fish life make it a perfect site for photography.

Diving

The waters beneath Lottin Point is a great diving spot for crayfish or spearing fish.

Lottin Point Bay

Safe family spot for the family with council provided public toilets. Perfect for a picnic or swimming and a perfect place for launching a small boat or canoe.

Kayaking

Lottin Point Motel hires sea faring kayaks for fishing the bay.

Helicopter Trips

We can shuttle people in from Whakatane or Opotiki to Lottin Point Motel with Opotiki Helicopters. We have our own helipad for landing.

Waihau Bay – Boy Film Set

Waititi’s 2010 film ‘Boy’ is a homage to his hometown, Waihau Bay, and many of the sites are exactly as they appear in the film. Check out Boy, Rocky and Chardonnay’s local haunts: buy an ice-block at the General Store or jump off the jetty across the road. A ten minutes drive west along the coast will take you past Raukokore school where Boy shows off his moonwalk and the Raukokore Bridge where Weirdo lives. You’ll also pass Waititi’s marae, Maru o Hinemaka (Pararaki), where the ‘Boy’ crew was based during filming.

From the motel, you are 30 minutes driving from Waihau Bay.

Mount Hikurangi

Hikurangi Te Toka Tapu, the sacred mountain of Ngati Porou holds a special place for the Maori people. Hikurangi represents “home” for the 70,000 plus Ngati Porou tribal members who live on the East Coast. Standing at 1754 meters, It is the highest non-volcanic mountain in the North Island. It is 130km north of Gisborne and the first point on the New Zealand mainland and the world to greet the morning sun.

It’s an hour and a half drive from Lottin Point Motel.  It’s a long hike up to the submit, and we will be happy to help you organize your hike.
